Wisdom Home
Its journey began in 1994 with only 10 children with destitute women as a house mother in a small cottage in a remote village named Kilavedu, which had no electric lights, no proper roads to reach. It is 5Kms from the buzzing Town of Chengalpattu on the way to historical place, Mammallapuram.
Since then, DSI has been growing and we have around 80 children in the wisdom home every year in 10 cottages and dormitory in two campuses of DSI. The children are accommodated from 6 years to 16 years of age.
Daily we get enough milk from our cows in the dairy farm and so we give milk to our children every day. We also give egg thrice a week & non-veg twice a week. Every month the nurse takes height & weight for the children. We have clinics in both homes, where the doctor comes in every Saturday. During school hours, the nurse is available for the schools also. We have quarterly medical camps for our children. Dental camps are also conducted specifically for our home and school children.
Karate, carrom and chess classes are conducted for home children. Tuition is also arranged for boys and girls home children to assist in their studies. The girls enjoy dancing and singing and often dance at programs and special occasions. On weekends the boys and girls play volleyball, football, and cricket. Some kids are interested to do gardening.
During holiday season we arrange short picnics and tours for children. DSI is an Inter-religious organization and hence all the festivals such as Pongal, Diwali, Bakrid, Christmas along with national festivals are celebrated.
Community Development
DSI facilitates community development projects in Irular villages such as Kollamedu, Madur and Malalinatham. Some of the projects are Herbal Garden at Kollamedu village, provision of bore well, reconstruction of houses at Malalinatham and providing free land for living for landless people of the Irular community.
About 20 children from Kollamedu, have been enrolled in our school every year. They are provided free education, free books and note books and uniform, all stationary, free midday meals, evening snacks and extra coaching classes and also free transport facilities. Few of the irular children without proper care at their houses have been admitted to the DSI home.
